Reflection

A simple yet effective way to create a nice effect is to create a reflection of a image. This is a pretty popular effect that you’ll see a lot of on the web. Here you’ll learn one of the easiest and most effective ways to create this illusion. Have fun!

Step 1

Open up a blank canvas. You can fill it with a colour if you like but it doesn’t really matter.

Step 2

Choose a image and copy it to your canvas, to do this you simply drag an image onto the canvas, if a new canvas opens up with the image you’ll need to copy it into the canvas you created. I chose a picture of a flower that I took this summer. Name the layer which now contains the image “Original”.

Step 3

Now resize the image so that you have room for another one beneath it.

To resize the image you simply select the “Original” layer and pressing CTRL + T and dragging one of the small squares in one of the corners of the image. To constrain the proportions of the image hold down shift while dragging. Press enter when your done resizing.

transformStep 4

Now select the layer of the image and duplicate it. You can do this by right-clicking the layer and pressing “Duplicate layer” in the dialog box or by pressing down with your left mouse button on the layer while holding down the Alt key and dragging the layer up or down. Using the alt key you can even just drag the image on the canvas to duplicate it. Name this duplicate layer “Reflection”.

Step 5

Now that we have duplicated the layer we need to use it as a reflection. If you move the image in the “Reflection” layer down a bit you can see that both of them are exactly the same.

To create a illusion of a reflection, the image should be reflected and not just duplicated. So now we select the reflection layer and press CTRL + T, then right-click inside the resizing-box/image and select “flip vertical” in the dialog box. Press enter when done resizing.

Now move the image in the “Reflection” layer downwards so that the bottom of the original image is touching the top of the reflection like the image below. The image now looks like a reflection of the original image.

Step 6

Now we’ve got a reflection of the image. This doesn’t really look that good. We want it to look like it’s reflecting off of a surface. To achieve this we select the “Reflection” layer and press the “Mask button” in the layers palette.

Step 7

It’s time for some magic. Select the Gradient tool  and choose the black to white gradient.

Make sure the “Reflection” layer is selected and then press and drag across the reflection image.

You can make a small or fullscale reflection, i made one of half the image. This is a simple way to create a reflection and once you get the hang of it you’ll be able to create this effect in seconds.

Hope it was helpfull! Here’s the final result
